Could the U.S. market open for Peruvian asparagus without fumigation?

The Peruvian Institute of Asparagus and Vegetables (IPEH) expects the United States to grant access for fresh Peruvian asparagus without fumigation this year, website Agraria.pe reported.

IPEH executive director Carlos Zamorano Macchiavello told the publication it would however be difficult to achieve this milestone without special requirements, which meant the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) could potentially impose additional safeguards.

Zamorano said the hope was this method of quarantine treatment would not simply be replaced by another, the story reported. esparragos_48577159 npanorama

"For us what would be ideal, and what we have asked, is to eliminate fumigation, and if that occurs it's welcomes. We recognize that there could be certain difficulties for something that drastic to happen," he told the publication.

He said the dropping of this quarantine treatment would make Peruvian asparagus more competitive in the marketplace as fumigation came with a financial and physical cost.

Also, the move would mean the product come into the market in more attractive and marketable packaging, the story reported.

Peruvian Asparagus Importers Association (PAIA) coordinator Priscilla Leras-Bush told www.freshfruitportal.com an opening would also pave the way for Peruvian asparagus to enter new market categories.

"Once the treatment upon entry has been eliminated there will be so many more options for the U.S. consumers, such as organics, and a varying amount of value – added presentations," she said.

"The Peruvian Asparagus Importers Association (PAIA) has maintained its supportive role with our exporter association regarding our united initiatives of working with agencies to eliminate fumigation for Peruvian asparagus.

"Peruvian asparagus is already known for its quality and consistency – we are aim to supply U.S. consumers continued demand for asparagus of excellent quality from Peru."

The USA accounts for 60% of fresh Peruvian asparagus exports.
