Australia: Conditions set scene for 'bumper' avocado crop

In a release, grower-owned business The Avolution highlighted expectations for a bumper crop of 68,000 metric tons (MT) rolling out from March to November, thanks to ideal growing conditions.

CEO Antony Allen said the ever-expanding industry wasĀ dedicated to maintaining avocadosā€™ presence as one of the most important fresh produce staples due to their versatility and health benefits.

"In recent years weā€™ve seen Australiaā€™s love for avocados go into overdrive and growers are working around the clock to meet demand. Many new tree plantings have been made so production can increase, but it takes years for trees to start bearing fruit," Allen said.

"The avocado shortage earlier this year sparked a higher price in the market due to simple supply and demand economics. Despite the rise in cost, the publicā€™s buying behaviour remained unchanged as droves of Aussies sought to get their avocado fix."

In the past 20 years, Australia's avocado production has increased from 18,000MT a year to nearly 68,500MT in 2015.

Four years ago, many of the 1,100 Aussie avocado growers were burying unused fruit. Today, a combination of disruptive uses and coordinated marketing has helped prices lift and opened new export possibilities.

The Avolution pointed to growing awareness of avocados' health benefits, including links toĀ better cognitive function, blood pressure, blood sugar, diet adherence and cardiovascular health.
