The cauliflower trend is really taking off in Britain, so much so that it’s being used in a new vegetarian-friendly 'steak' just in time for the U.K. barbecue season.

Tesco has launched what it describes as the 'U.K.’s first ever cauliflower and mushroom steak' to give consumers who don’t eat meat much more choice on the grill.

The retailer says its latest introduction comes at a time when vegetarian food purchases are on the rise and taps into the ongoing trend for cauliflower.

Cauliflower has transformed into a popular trend over the last few years because of the popularization of spiralizing vegetables as a low carbohydrate alternative to rice and couscous.

Last year the supermarket launched vegetable alternatives to replace food like pasta, potatoes, rice, bread and bread-related products because of the spiralizing food fashion, made even more popular because of endorsements from celebrity chefs.

"Vegetarian customers have told us they often feel they can be an afterthought at BBQ parties and if they’re lucky they might be able to find some corn on the cob or halloumi," says Tesco food developer Alison Stokes.

"We’ve decided to help by creating the U.K.’s first ever cauliflower and Portobello mushroom steaks which we believe is an irresistibly delicious option, not only to vegetarians but also to meat eaters.

"Cauliflower steaks and Portobello mushroom burgers are already very popular in trendy restaurants around the country and in recipes from celebrity chefs such as Jamie Oliver, but this is the first time they’ve ever been available in high street supermarkets."

Across the Atlantic in the United States, cauliflower was one of the most prominent vegetable items in the recent Google’s Food Trends 2016 report
