Food safety watchdog Agrocalidad EcuadorĀ said a delegation from theĀ U.S. Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) had recently visited the Andean country to access measures to monitor fruit fly on farms.

The trip took place from August 29 to Sept. 2, during which time the APHIS officials visited the provinces ofĀ Imbabura, Pichincha, Cotopaxi, Tungurahua, Morona Santiago, Guayas and Santa Elena.

The inspectors also verified the phytosanitary certification process in the country's storage facilities,Ā visiting both the Mariscal Sucre International Airport and the Port of Guayaquil.

"The aim of the trip was to finalize work plans for tamarillo, golden berries (also known as cape gooseberries), bell peppers, blackberries, raspberries, and dragon fruit (also known as pitahaya), to establish viable procedures for the export of these products to the United States," Agrocalidad said.

Ecuador has had a fruit fly control system since 2014 through a National Management Project that involves diagnosis and surveillance, quarantine, and integrated pest management on farms.

Agrocalidad added the APHIS delegates had classifiedĀ Ecuador as a country with 'export potential' and a 'high level of reliability'.
