U.S.: Weekly Mexican mango imports more than double 2016 levels

The U.S. National Mango Board (NMB) has noted that mango imports at the beginning of March were more than double what they were in the same week last year, with Mexico responsible for most of the increase.

Mango volume shipped on the week ending March 3 was approximately 1.44 million boxes, putting it 120% higher year-on-year, according to data from the NMB.

During that week, Mexican volume was around 1.17 million boxes, for a total of 4.42 million boxes shipped so far this season that began in January. By the same week last year only 2.89 million boxes had been shipped.

In total, Mexico is forecast to ship 30.3 million boxes of the tropical fruit to the U.S. through week 20.

Peru's mango season is coming to its end, with around 50,000 boxes shipped during the week. In total the South American country had shipped 15.19 million boxes of mango by the end of the week - 62% higher than at the same time last year.

Larger year-on-year volumes are also coming out of Nicaragua and Guatemala.

Nicaragua had shipped around 580,000 boxes by March 3, compared to 240,000 boxes last season. The country is expected to ship 1.4 million boxes in total.

Meanwhile, Guatemala's season has recently kicked off and the country is expected to ship 4.9 million boxes to the U.S. By early March the country had shipped 142,000 boxes compared to 26,000 last year.
