Spain: 12 convicted of illegally growing patented blueberry varieties

Spanish authorities are bringing criminal charges against 12 people convicted of illegally growing more than 100,000 blueberry plants of proprietary varieties without license, local media 20 Minutos reported.

A total of 123,479 plants were seized from several farms in Huelva, with a reported value of around €1 million. The southeastern region produces the vast majority of Spain's berries.

The Civil Guard carried out an investigation from May 2017 until January 2018, which involved "careful work of research and verification", and the review of documentation and samples.

The alleged perpetrators are accused of owning, growing and reproducing the plants.
