Uruguay aims to enter U.S. market with citrus in 2011

Uruguay’s fruit industry is looking to citrus exports to enter the U.S. market in 2011, local news site Espectador.com reported.

Quoting Horacio Ozer Ami, president of the country’s fruit growers and exporters association Upefruy, the report said that the country is in a process of diversifying both the number of countries that receive Uruguayan fruit as well as the range of fruits available for export. Its traditional receiving market has been Europe.

Besides citrus, the country is also exporting blueberries, apples and pears.  Ozer Ami said that it has already started exporting blueberries to the U.S. and Canada.

“Uruguay is diversifying its markets and in this strategy the exporters have started, along with the government … an attitude of more promotion of our products trying to reach greater insertion in markets that we already have open as well as new ones,” Ozer Ami is quoted as saying.

Upefruy represents around 95% of the country’s fresh fruit industry, the report added.
