Tesco receives South African stonefruit award
Grower body Hortgro has named U.K. retailer Tesco as the South African Stone Fruit Retailer of the Year 2012.
Hortgro product manager Jacques du Preez presented the award to Tesco stonefruit technologist Natalie Slack at the company's headquarters last month.
"Tesco has worked closely with the South African fruit industry's promotional effort since it began in 2009. It has collaborated with us to achieve great stand out South African fruit in the stone fruit category, working with the campaign to help its customers identify South African fruit when it's eating at its very best," he said in a release.
Du Preez added Tesco had also helped Hortgro in communicating the varieties, seasonal and ethical attributes that made South African fruit unique.
In 2012 the retailer has included the South African logo on punnets of stonefruit, contributed its own point of sale material for Flavor King plums and helped with a customer information booklet.
"Crucially, Tesco has achieved a strong year-on-year performance during the season for South African stone fruit", du Preez said.
"This is a real endorsement of this coordinated and collaborative approach to marketing stone fruit."
