Peru keeps high hopes for Japanese avocado market

Peruvian officials were left hopeful that the nation's avocados may soon be welcome in Japan, following a visit by Japanese officials with Peru's National Sanitation Service (Senasa).paltas_21442027

Peru's agriculture minister Milton von Hesse met with Japanese government representatives this week to show off the Andean industry, Andina.com.pe reported.

The Japanese delegation, led by Phytosanitary Division deputy director Hitoshi Yoshimura, was brought to production zones and packing houses, in an effort to win over the market of 129 million potential consumers.

Senasa cited a 2009-10 study carried out through the United States Department of Agriculture that showed Peruvian Hass avocados to be free of fruit fly.

Last June, von Hess led a trade mission with Senasa to China, Japan and Korea to promote Peruvian products.

Von Hess asked Japanese authorities to verify Peru's phytosanitary conditions and certification system to continue along the approval process.

"We want there to be a recognition process by Japan of our health authority so that there is a lone requirement between the two countries. Recognition would help Peruvian competitiveness a lot with respect to our neighbors," the minister said in Andina.com.pe.
