NZ may deport man who revealed kiwifruit worker abuses

Despite promises of protection from New Zealand authorities, an Indian man who gave them information about kiwifruit worker abuses has lost his job and may be deported from the country, website Sunlive.co.nz reported. kiwi_1211550 vine small

The story reported Hardeep Singh helped Immigration NZ and the Ministry of Business Immigration and Employment (MBIE) in a case that led to the removal of three illegal workers fromĀ Bay of Plenty farms.

Singh told the publication that once his employer got wind of his assistance given to MBIE, he was removed from an administrative job and sent to the orchard, and was not paid from that day.

The story reported that after a week of unemployment, deportation procedures against him would begin.

Singh said many kiwifruit workers were working for less than minimum wage and were not paid holiday leave under threats of deportation.

"I was beaten, but I was lucky, some people get more beaten up," Singh was quoted as saying.

Singh told Sunlive in his job he used to mainly manage Japanese, German and English workers, but now most were Indian and Nepalese.
