The Portuguese produce industry aims to build on its three-year export rise of 26% through its presence as the Fruit Logistica partner country, with a pavilion that will cover some 600 square meters. Portugal Fresh

An event press release highlighted the country's fresh produce exports reached ā‚¬2.6 billion (US$3 billion) last year, while exports accounted for ā‚¬1 billion (US$1.15 billion).

"For us the new markets are Brazil, Angola and some produce has gone to the UAE and Asia," Portugal Fresh CEO GonƧalo Andrade told www.freshfruitportal.com.

"We only export 3% of our fruits and vegetables to Germany but it's a really important market for us and we want to make an effort in promotion.Ā We are trying to approach the German market, mainly with the Rocha pear.

"We have a big campaign together with 12 companies from Portugal that make up a supply of more or less 65% of the total offering of Rocha pears, and we are trying to approach some important retailers; to give you an idea, we have already exported around 85 trucks of Rocha pears since September."

He said the Portuguese delegation was very proud of achieving this moment.

The southern European country's mild, sunny weather allows for earlier harvesting, which in many cases is outside the production cycles of central and northern European nations. With the highest average for sunny days in Europe, conditions positively affect the aroma and flavor of Portugal's produce, while the frost-free climate along the coast enables outdoor cultivation of produce that can only be grown in greenhouses elsewhere.

The event organizers also highlighted the opportunities presented by new irrigation infrastructure that has been developed in recent years, including Europe's largest artificial lake, the Alqueva Reservoir which is used to irrigate some 120,000 hectares of arable land.
