Mexico: Frosts to halve April's Persian lime production

Freezing temperatures in parts of Mexico mean there will be up to half as much Persian limes during April than normal, with prices seeing a strong upward trend.Ā limes_20941885 _ small

Low temperatures over recent weeks mean export prices for the fruit have already reached 300 pesos (US$19.80) per 18kg box.

The industry reportedly expects prices to climb even further this month, as many growing areas were hit severely by recent frosts.

The reduced supply has also been reflected in domestic market prices, with prices for smaller sized fruit between 10-12 pesos (US$0.66-0.79) per kilo, and between 16-18 pesos (US$1.05-1.18) per kilo.

National Persian Lime Committee president CƩsar CortƩs Bello forecast that the first weeks of April would see a drop in up to 50% of production, and so the price would likely hit US$35-40 per box.

The National Meteorological Service (SMN) expects the cold weather to continue in parts of the country, forecasting a sharp drop in temperatures and heavy rains soon in the northeast of the country.

The SMN said there would likely be temperatures of between -5Ā°C to 5Ā°C (23Ā°F to 41Ā°F) in Baja California, Sonora, Chihuahua, Durango, Zacatecas, Hidalgo, Tlaxcala and Puebla.
