English heatwave brings tomato season forward

The U.K's spring heatwave has led to English tomatoes being harvesting earlier than usual, and the local produce is now in stock at high-end retailer Waitrose.Ā tomatoes zoom vines

The home-grown tomatoes hit the supermarket chain's shelves just a couple of weeks after the the retailer announced the early appearance of raspberries.

The traditional tomato season normally starts later in April but this yearā€™s supply has come early because of unusually good weather in the country over the last few weeks, along with a generally mild winter.

High temperatures and plenty of sunshine throughout spring have given production a boost.

A release also says a 'bumper crop' is expected in the coming weeks and months when the tomato season really kicks in.

The English varieties available include the large and sweet Jack Hawkins, Red Choice - described as the 'connoisseurā€™s tomato with a luxurious aroma' - and the small and juicy Baby Plum.

They are grown in greenhouses by Waitrose partners throughout the U.K. and are hand-picked to maintain quality.

"Our customers can choose from a wide variety of home-grown tomatoes and in bigger quantities than this time last year," Waitrose vegetable buyer Peter Cooke says in the release.
