Following on from last week's walkout when dock workers downed tools for 24 hours, the Dutch Trade Union Federation (FNV) says there is further potential for strikes but is waiting to be invited back to the table to reach a deal.

Up to 800 dock worker jobs are at risk following the introduction of new automated systems at the port's container facilities, and the conflict led to import delays.

Yesterday the FNV's Niek Stam told www.freshfruitportal.com he was waiting for a call to reignite talks.

"The latest information is that yesterday (Jan. 11) we had a meeting to explore the possibilities with the port authorities to restart the negotiations and we are now waiting for the invitation for this week," he says.

Further industrial action is not ruled out as union officials want a pledge for job security to 2020 and beyond.

Last week's 24-hour strike led to delays and blockages on fresh produce consignments at Europe’s largest port.
