U.S.: PEAKfresh produce bags used by NASA

California-based PEAKfresh USA has said that the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) is using its produce bags on its latest resupply mission.

The launch successfully took place Monday (April 2) at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station and will be delivering supplies and equipment to the International Space Station (ISS).

The bags are being used by NASA to store fruit and vegetables such as oranges, apples, carrots and tomatoes. Prior to launch, the produce was washed, air-dried, placed in the bags and then stored in the capsule. Once arriving at the ISS, the produce will remain in the packaging until consumed by the astronauts.

PEAKfresh uses a natural occuring mineral that extracts ethylene gas – the agent that causes produce to ripen. By reducing ethylene gas, the company says it can boost shelf life three-fold.

“PEAKfresh has a long history of successfully helping produce growers, shippers, and retailers in preserving their produce from harvest, to storage, during transit and at store level,” said PEAKfresh USA CEO Greg Ganzerla.
