New Zealand-based company licenses new pear cultivar

Prevar Limited granted global marketing rights for a new pear variety to Associated International  Group of Nurseries, the company announced Sept. 16.

The variety, known as PremP109, is bright red with yellow undertones, has a juicy texture and a mild, sweet flavor, the statement said.

Lynnell Brandt, president of AIGN, said he believes the variety will do well in apple and pear markets, adding that it has good shelf life. The new cultivar has been well received to date, he said, and AIGN is seeking a brand name for it.

PremP109 was developed by Plant & Food Research, a food-science company based in New Zealand.

AIGN is represented in Chile by Viveros Requinoa; in Argentina by Los Alamos de Rosauer; in New Zealand by the New Zealand Fruit Tree Company; in Australia by ANFIC; in South Africa by Top Fruit Ltd.; and in the United States by Brandt´s Fruit Tree Company, according to AIGN´s Web site.
