Besana: Pack with zero environmental impact by 2025

PRESS RELEASE

Packaging with "zero waste" by 2025 and with "zero impact" by 2035. The Besana Group, world leader in nuts and dried fruit, is increasing its green commitment and determining progressive and increasingly ambitious objectives for the next 15 years.

Already in 2020 one quarter of the packaging used by the company will be recyclable and the share will rise to 100% within the next five years.

The third and final stage of the "green" route is scheduled for 2035, when all packaging solutions will be produced entirely from renewable and recycled sources, for a real zero impact on the environment.

The presentation of Besanaā€™s project took place during the "Flexo Day 2019", held in Bologna on 21 and 22 November.

During the event dedicated to flexography, a printing technique used for  packaging, the Group announced its sustainability objectives, based on the ā€œ4 Rā€ principles: Reduction, Reuse, Recovery and Recycling, for a circular and totally self-sustaining route.

Besana's commitment in this field starts many years ago and the results obtained over the years have been publicly acknowledged already in 2016, when the Group was awarded the Packaging Oscar for having promoted, within its own production lines, the use of packaging that had the dual purpose of reusing and reducing plastic.

"We have been investing an important part of our resources in environmental sustainability for years - confirms Riccardo Calcagni, Managing Director of the Besana Group.

"We want now to  strengthen and enhance our green objectives through the implementation of concrete actions that, within the next 15 years, will lead us to adopt a proper circular and virtuous system for all our production worldwide ā€.

The Group's commitment to reducing the use of plastic is also reflected in a new packaging which is currently being studied to be 100% biodegradable and compostable and will soon be introduced on the market. "

"It will be made entirely with materials derived from cellulose: both the base, a real  substitute for the current plastic trays, and the top film that closes it" - explains GianPaolo Gentile, Head of Purchasing and Packaging Specialist of Besana - a solution designed to be completely recoverable on paper, a concrete and eloquent example of our commitment to the environment."

Besana has 35 packaging lines in four different production sites, with over 125 million units of product packaged annually and more than 150 products launched each year.

This year packaging made of PE single material (polyethylene) was developed and launched on the market, recognized as fully recyclable by the British market, with a consequent saving of 9 tons of carbon dioxide.

Thanks also to the reduction in the use of plastic and the use of recycled raw materials, Besana in 2019 reduced the CO2 consumption by almost 500 tons, which become over 2,000 tons, considering also the optimization of efficiency of production processes.
