SnapDragon apples ready to conquer aisles this Halloween

Harvesting across New York is unleashing a monster crop of SnapDragon apples this fall. The proprietary variety is poised to sink its teeth into expanded retail shelf space after an 18 percent sales surge last year.

Crunch Time Apple Growers, the marketing cooperative behind the cultivar, expects one of its largest yields to date for the 2026 season. Favorable weather conditions, including timely rainfall and seasonal temperature swings, drove strong fruit sizing, vivid color development, and the signature spicy-sweet flavor profile, according to a company press release.

The grower has refined its packing protocols to better maintain crispness and post-harvest quality to support the expanding volume. The co-op is also scaling its grower network with emerging plantings in Pennsylvania alongside direct-market growers across the country, shortening logistics corridors to major metropolitan markets.

“SnapDragon has become a fan favorite, and it’s exciting to see how much people have come to love this apple,” said Executive Director Jessica Wells. “It has earned its place, and we believe it’s time to give it more room to grow, both on the retail shelf and in the conversations we’re having with our customers."

The variety will be featured prominently at the International Fresh Produce Association’s Global Produce & Floral Show in Orlando, FL, Wells noted. Attendees can sample the new harvest alongside custom dipping sauces and interact with Snappy, the brand's mascot.

Wells noted that the IFPA show provides a key venue to build direct alignment with retail buyers and distribution partners.

“This year, we wanted to give SnapDragon the space it deserves. It’s an apple people recognize and come back to, and having more room to showcase it gives us a chance to tell its story and introduce it to even more people so they see what makes SnapDragon different. We know once they take a bite, they’ll understand why it belongs in their shoppers’ carts,” Wells noted.

Fresh shipments are hitting grocery distribution channels now, making them available nationwide immediately.

“We know retailers want more than a great apple. They want confidence in the supply, consistency in the eating experience, and a brand that shoppers recognize and come back for,” the executive said. “That’s what we’re working to deliver with SnapDragon, and this season is a strong step forward.”
