Peruvian Hass avocado exports reach historic levels, US imports surge

The Peruvian Hass Avocado Growers and Exporters Association (ProHass) said the country’s Hass avocado season is closing with over 690,000 metric tons of exported fruit, a total increase of 37 percent compared to last season.

Most of the total volume (424,000 tons) was shipped to Europe, with the remainder primarily exported to the United States, Japan, and China. These markets have experienced an important surge in Peruvian avocado exports.

The Andean nation is gaining traction in the north

Mexico remains the leading avocado supplier to the US, with a 95 percent market share. This year, Peru became the second-largest, although the Latin American country only controls 5 percent of the US market.

However, this is no small feat. Thanks to Peru’s strategy to further solidify its presence in the North American market and an increase in local avocado supply, the 2025 season saw US imports of Peruvian green gold grow by over 50 percent.

The South American fruit also occupied the position of second-largest supplier during several peak weeks this season. The Peruvian Avocado Commission capitalized on the heightened interest by providing tailored retailer support, including e-coupons, point-of-sale materials, and advertising circular integrations.

As for the increase in supply, ProHass President José Antonio Castro said it was the “result of hectares entering production and the recovery of many fields that were affected by climatic factors over the past three seasons.”

Japanese avocado imports saw an increase of 73 percent, and China’s imports increased by 25 percent.

In total, 98 percent of the projected avocado volume has been exported. The organization announced that the official closing report for the 2025 season will be available at the end of October, marking the beginning of projections for the 2026 season.
