Crunch Time’s SnapDragon apple stretches season, sees sales and production uptick
Crunch Time Apple Growers’ club variety SnapDragon is finding more time on the calendar—and more room on retail shelves. The New York State cooperative expects to pack about 500,000 boxes this fall, while high-tech protocols are allowing the cultivar to extend its run well into the summer.
Executive Director Jessica Wells told FreshFruitPortal.com that ongoing collaboration with Cornell University researchers has allowed them to refine controlled-atmosphere (CA) storage standards and achieve the extended sales window.

“Recent adjustments, including lower oxygen levels and higher storage temperatures, have helped us further extend the marketing season while preserving the exceptional crunch, juiciness and flavor that have become hallmarks of the SnapDragon brand,” she explained.
The extended storage capability gives retailers access to SnapDragon beyond the traditional fall and winter marketing periods. Some long-term CA rooms were opened in July with fruit quality that the group said rivaled the condition of fruit entering storage.
SnapDragon’s measured growth
Production is expected to rise 15 percent this season, driven by now productive acreage in response to retailer support and consumer demand. However, Wells noted that the cooperative remains cautious.
“While bearing acreage continues to increase, we're taking a measured approach to future plantings to ensure supply remains aligned with market demand and supports long-term value for both growers and retailers,” Wells said of the expansion.

Pricing also remained a focus during the 2025 crop year. SnapDragon entered the season with a competitively positioned FOB price. This, Wells said, is an indicator of the product’s reliable quality.
“Maintaining both movement and value without significant promotional discounting is a strong indicator that consumers are choosing SnapDragon because of its consistently outstanding eating experience, not simply because of price,” the executive noted.
Wells also pointed to continued cost pressure from labor, transportation, crop inputs and packaging as key drivers behind the cultivar’s push.
“As an industry, finding sustainable pricing that supports continued investment in quality fruit production remains critically important,” she stressed.
Digital demand and longer hauls
SnapDragon's digital retail sales increased 28 percent, with online grocery platforms accounting for a significant share of the growth. Wells noted that this type of strategic investment at the point of purchase can have a “meaningful impact on awareness, trial, and repeat purchases”.
“We were among the earlier apple brands to invest consistently in digital retail media, and we've continued to prioritize those channels as shopper behavior evolves,” she said.

The group is also pushing distribution deeper into Texas and western domestic markets. While apples are well-suited for long-distance distribution, the effort is not without its challenges.
“Expanding distribution into markets farther from New York requires close coordination across the supply chain. Strong demand in these newer markets has supported increased shipment volumes, which helps create efficiencies through fuller truckloads and consistent movement,” Wells concluded.
