Spanish officials seize cocaine in Colombian banana shipment

Spanish officials have arrested the administrator of a fruit company in Seville following the seizure of 900kg (1,984lbs) of cocaine in a banana shipment from Colombia. Drug seizure Spain

The bust is the result of a joint investigation undertaken by the National Police and the Customs Agency which began in April, when it became known an international organization based in Spain was filling seafreight shipments with cocaine for distribution.

After initial investigations agents discovered the group owned a fruit company in Seville, whose administrator traveled to Colombia on two occasions allegedly to negotiate with drug suppliers.

The investigation progressed, and thanks to collaboration with international bodies from countries such as France and Ecuador, it became known an arrival of illegal drugs had taken place at the port of Algeciras.

The drugs were then sent to a warehouse in Sevillewhere police carried out the bust, arresting two workers and the administrator.

Authorities also found a diverse range of documentation related to the company and three mobile telephone numbers. The investigation continues and authorities plan to make new arrests.

A police report did not provide the name of the fruit company in question.
