Uzbek president dismantles fresh produce export monopoly

Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev has announced the abolition of monopoly UzAgroExport, a state backed initiative for exports of fresh fruits and vegetables, the Tashkent Times reports.

The announcement means that as of July 1 any business will be allowed to export fresh produce under direct contracts, so long as there are 100% advanced payment terms in the contract, the story reported.

The story reported the entity, which was set-up in 2016, presented bureaucratic obstacles for exports.

The latest move is designed to encourage farms to increase their production to meed demand in foreign markets.

According to ITC statistics, the Central Asian country exported US$390.6 million worth of fruit last year, with key commodities including grapes (US$152 million), stonefruit (US$123 million), berries (US$40 million) and nuts (US$39 million).

The leading market for Uzbek fruit was Kazakhstan with a value of US$227 million, followed by Russia (US$61 million), Turkey (US$37 million), China (US$25 million), Germany (US$10 million) and Saudi Arabia (US$6 million).

The U.S. was Uzbekistan's 10th largest market, purchasing US$1.6 million worth of the country's fruit.
