Canada: Retailer withdraws broccoli florettes over possible E.coli contamination

Costco Wholesale Canada has taken bags of Gold Coast Packing broccoli florettes off the shelves due to possible E. coli O26 contamination.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) announced yesterday the recall was triggered by the California-based company for its Broccettes-branded product, which weighs 908g and carries the code "12 AU 2017".

"The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) is conducting a food safety investigation, which may lead to the recall of other products," the CFIA said.

In the announcement the agency emphasized there had been no reported illnesses associated with the consumption of this product.

"Food contaminated with E. coli O26 may not look or smell spoiled but can still make you sick. Symptoms can include nausea, vomiting, mild to severe abdominal cramps and watery to bloody diarrhea," the agency said.

"In severe cases of illness, some people may have seizures or strokes, need blood transfusions and kidney dialysis or live with permanent kidney damage. In severe cases of illness, people may die."

Gold Coast marketing coordinator Crystal Chavez told Fresh Fruit Portal the company was investigating the issue.

"We have notified everywhere where the product was sent out and at the retail level it's only in Costco," she said.

"We have an 800 number that has been opened for any clients or consumers who have any questions or concerns."
