Peruvian pecans break into Chinese market
After clearing phytosanitary hurdles, the first 25-ton shipment of Peruvian pecans is officially making its way into the worldās most populous country. Following the protocolās signature in November last year, the Andean countryās National Agricultural Health Service (SENASA) certified the first batch, marking a significant step in Peruās efforts to diversify its agricultural exports to key Asian markets.
"This is the result of the work the government has done to enable Peruvian products to enter more markets around the world. Today, producers in San Juan Bautista in Ica are already making the dream of agricultural exports a reality," says Peru's Minister of Agriculture, Ćngel Manero.
Unlike other markets, China also imports pecans in-shell, creating new opportunities for Peruvian growers.
Vilma Gutarra, head of SENASA, emphasizes that the milestone strengthens Peru's small and medium-sized producers and reaffirms SENASA's commitment to the competitiveness of local agriculture globally.
A nutty new frontier
Peruās pecan sector spans over 3,700 acres, primarily concentrated in the Ica region. Pecan production is also significant in Chincha, Pisco, Huaral, Huaura, Barranca, CaƱete, and Arequipa.
The majority are small and medium family farms, with 3,834 production sites in Ica alone. There are also 10 authorized packing plants, most located in Ica.
Peruvian pecans have access to 32 international markets. Germany remains the main destination, followed by Hong Kong and Ecuador, with a total of 301 tons exported over the past seven years.
China is one of Peru's main trading partners, with agricultural imports exceeding $420 million annually. Blueberries, table grapes, and avocados are among the South American powerhouseās star products.
