Meet Dole's new pineapple: the Colada Royale

After more than 15 years of development at its historic farm in La Ceiba, Honduras, Dole is debuting a new pineapple variety: the Colada Royale Pineapple.

The premium fruit, conventionally bred for a cream-colored flesh and distinct coconut and piña colada flavor notes, makes its official debut Oct. 16–18, 2025, at the IFPA Global Produce & Floral Show and will arrive in supermarkets across North America this October.

The Colada Royale represents the latest innovation in Dole’s 125-year pineapple legacy. According to Dole’s director of communications, Bil Goldfield, the goal was to combine traditional growing techniques with unexpected, indulgent flavors at a price point accessible to all shoppers.

“This is not a novelty,” said Goldfield. “It’s a long-term strategy to expand the tropical experience for consumers and the centerpiece of Dole’s quasquicentennial celebration of growing the world’s leading pineapple.”

The new variety is also the career-defining project of Roberto Young, a Honduran native and Dole’s lead pineapple breeder. Young, who joined Dole in 1997 after earning his Ph.D. from Michigan State University, spent nearly three decades overseeing natural breeding programs in La Ceiba.

He calls the Colada Royale his “crowning achievement.”
