FreshDirect’s food 2026 trend forecast: From artisanal waters to restaurant-quality staples

New York online food retailer FreshDirect forecasts increased demand for new and diverse flavors, as well as an affinity for local products in 2026.

This projection, part of the service’s annual food trends report, highlights products and categories expected to see higher demand and steal the show in the next twelve months.

What’s next, according to FreshDirect

Sweet and spicy: Swicy

FreshDirect notes that Americans are falling for the sweet-and-spicy craze, a flavor sensation already beloved in Latin America and Southeast Asia. Imagine medjool date strips dusted with chili-lime and Tajin, or a creamy, sweet chili-garlic hummus.

From snacks and frozen meals to condiments and canned drinks, shoppers are reaching for that perfect sweet-and-spicy balance, chasing what FreshDirect calls the perfect bite.

Not your momma’s water

Maybe TikTok sensation Ashton Hall was onto something. The fresh food e-commerce predicts that this year, shoppers from every corner of the globe will be reaching for artisanal mineral spring waters.

With restaurants now hiring water sommeliers to curate tasting menus, FreshDirect says diners are discovering new water brands and bringing the trend home, choosing bottles not just for hydration but for their unique notes of salinity, minerality, and more.

The more matcha movement

Baristas may have crowned this the year of matcha, but FreshDirect says next year, the green tea will be popping up in foods everywhere.

With Americans craving matcha’s bold, savory flavor and wellness perks, expect to see more snacks, desserts, and supplements going green with matcha in the coming year.

Made in the USA

Next year, a Made in the USA label might be the only marketing move you need.

According to FreshDirect, Americans are paying closer attention to a product’s origin—If it’s made locally, most choose it and will continue to do so.

Shoppers have long sought out local produce, meats, and seafood for freshness and to support neighborhood businesses.

Now, US-made pantry staples like flour and peanut butter are joining the weekly shopping list.

Extra buzz, extra fun

In 2026, you could have a Negroni waiting for you at home—no tip required.

The service said its FreshDirect Wine & Spirits category has seen an uptick in consumer purchases of high-ABV ready-to-drink cocktails, and it doesn’t expect the trend to subside anytime soon.

Convenience is driving this surge, as people look to enjoy their favorite drinks without ever leaving the couch.

Restaurant-quality meals right from the pantry

And while consumers sip a professionally crafted cocktail at home, they can also bring a taste of their favorite restaurants straight to their kitchen, thanks to retailers.

FreshDirect says more top chefs are launching product lines that promise a restaurant-worthy experience in people’s kitchens. And next year, the retailer said, that amount of restaurant offerings will only grow.
