In the last four months, the e-commerce giant Amazon has significantly expanded its Same-Day delivery service for perishable groceries, now reaching more than 2,300 cities and towns across the US.

The service, the company says, has been driven by customer demand for convenience and value.

Previously launched in metropolitan hotspots like New York City, Los Angeles, and Chicago, Amazon’s same-day grocery delivery is now available in new areas, including Boise, ID, Salt Lake City, UT, Fort Collins, CO, Omaha, NE, Sugar Land, TX, Des Moines, IA, Kennesaw, GA, and Gaithersburg, MD.

Data from the Amazon rollout shows a significant shift in customer habits, crowning fresh groceries—including fruits, vegetables, dairy, meat, seafood, and frozen foods—as central to the platform’s same-day business.

The company reports that bananas, avocados, and blueberries are among the most-ordered items, with fresh groceries now accounting for nine of the ten top-selling products.

Since January, perishable grocery sales through the Same-Day Delivery network have increased 30-fold. This level of adoption also reflects changes in shopping frequency: customers who utilize the service for fresh groceries shop approximately twice as often as those who don’t.

Doug Herrington, CEO of Worldwide Amazon Stores, noted that customers are using the Same-Day Delivery service to combine grocery items with non-food essentials such as electronics, gifts, and household goods in a single order.

Amazon is now a grocery retailer

Amazon has expanded the selection of fresh groceries available through the service by more than 30 percent since August.

The expansion includes items from Whole Foods Market and features the company’s new private brand, Amazon Grocery, which offers over 1,000 items, many priced under $5.

This network contributes to Amazon's overall grocery operation, which generated over $100 billion in gross sales in 2024. This effectively makes the e-commerce platform one of the largest grocery retailers in the US.
