Watermelon industry gathers in Florida, crowns new queen at 2026 convention
The National Watermelon Association (NWA) brought together growers, shippers, and industry stakeholders from across the United States at its 2026 Annual Meeting & Convention in St. Pete Beach, where members recognized industry leadership, raised funds for association initiatives, and named a new national ambassador.
Georgia Watermelon Ambassador Katelyn Lindsay was crowned the 2026 National Watermelon Queen, a role that includes representing the industry at retail promotions, trade events, and consumer outreach efforts nationwide over the coming year.

The association also used the event to recognize contributions across the supply chain. During the Hall of Fame luncheon, the late Jay Nichols was inducted into the NWA Hall of Fame. His son, Steve Nichols, accepted the award and reflected on his father’s career in the watermelon industry and military service, including participation in the Battle of the Bulge.
Colton Barton received the Dan Thomas Future Watermelon Farm Leader Award, while Ray Vincent earned the Outstanding Service Award for his leadership and long-standing involvement with the association, including serving as a past president and convention auctioneer.
Auction growth supports industry, charities
The convention’s annual auction generated higher proceeds than the previous year, supported by both traditional items and “auction loads,” which are contracts for truckloads of watermelons pledged by members. According to the association, the event reflects continued engagement and financial support from industry participants.
Proceeds from the auction support NWA programs, with designated charity loads benefiting Moffitt Cancer Center and Now I Lay Me Down to Sleep.

Outgoing National Watermelon Queen Elanie was also recognized for her service over the past year, with the association noting her role in promoting the category and supporting its outreach.
“We are incredibly proud of the leadership, generosity, and engagement shown throughout this Convention,” said George Szczepanski, Executive Director of the NWA. “From honoring those who built our industry, to crowning a new National Queen, to seeing members rally behind the Association’s mission, this gathering reflects the strength and unity of the Watermelon Family.”
The NWA announced that its 2027 Annual Meeting & Convention will take place at Planet Hollywood Las Vegas.
