US produce sector looks to digital tools to enhance food safety

The recent Cyclospora outbreak linked to iceberg lettuce has intensified the focus on the speed and precision of produce traceability and food safety. Against this backdrop, Information and Communication Technology (ICT) is assuming a critical role in the United States agricultural sector, according to research firm Market Intelo.

The company’s Food Safety Criticality report notes that growers, packers, distributors and retailers are turning to real-time data, digital traceability and predictive analytics to manage risk and respond faster.

The global ICT market was valued at $6.8 trillion in 2025, with the segment projected to reach $13.1 trillion by 2034, growing at a compound annual growth rate of 7.5 percent.

This confirms the report’s claim that food safety “is no longer a back-office compliance box” but instead “a market-critical requirement that affects brand reputation, consumer health, and supply-chain resilience.”

The analysis also points to stricter US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) requirements and growing demand for automated cold-chain monitoring as key drivers of technology adoption. Farms are using real-time sensors to monitor produce conditions, while automated systems can track temperature throughout storage and transportation.

Digital traceability can “reduce time to identify affected lots from days to minutes,” potentially helping companies narrow recalls and limit associated costs, the report states.

Food safety level up: From paper to digital trail

Fresh produce presents particular food-safety challenges because of its perishable nature, often consumed raw and moving through multiple supply-chain touchpoints.

The report identifies irrigation water, soil, worker hygiene, transportation conditions, and cross-contact during processing among the potential contamination risks. It also points to limitations in traditional systems, saying “paper-based records, sporadic inspections, and siloed data make it slow and difficult to pinpoint contamination sources or react rapidly to an emerging issue.”

“ICT solutions create a continuous, digital thread of information across the produce supply chain that makes quality and safety both measurable and manageable,” the report says.

The technology framework includes sensors and Internet of Things devices that monitor temperature, humidity and soil or water quality. Additionally, cloud-like platforms consolidate information from farms, packhouses, transportation fleets and retail sites; and analytics and machine learning help identify anomalies and predict spoilage.

Digital traceability systems can capture batch IDs, harvest dates, processing steps and distribution movements, creating records that can support audits and recalls. Consumer-facing tools, including QR codes, apps and dashboards, can provide additional information on provenance and product quality.

Environmental sensors can also provide early warnings when conditions become favorable for microbial growth or spoilage. The report says continuous monitoring can “flag conditions that accelerate microbial growth or spoilage, allowing corrective action before a batch is compromised.”
