Peru's mandarin exports jump 20% in value

Peru's mandarin exports have increased in value year-on-year by more than 20% to US$37.4 million from January to August, the country's Ministry of Agriculture (Minag) has announced.

England and Canada are the main importers with easy peelers ranking fifth among fruits exported to different markets, accounting for 6.9% of the fruit Peru produces.

The volume of exports for the same period stood at 36 metric tons (MT) compared with 33MT the previous year - a 9.5% year-on-year increase.

England is the largest importer with 11,100 MT (31%), followed by Canada at 7,500MT (21%) and the Netherlands at 6,700MT (18.5%).

Minag said the U.S. imported 5,600MT and Ireland purchased 1,700MT (4.7%), while Finland, Portugal and Iran are emerging as new markets.

Mandarin exports grew at an average rate of 23.8% from 2005 to 2010 to reach 37,000MT.

Tangerine production grew at an average annual rate of 5.3%, with higher production in Lima, JunĆ­n, Ica and Puno, among others.
