Dominican Republic announces pineapple assistance package

Dominican Republic President Danilo Medina has pledged to buy 10 million pineapple suckers to support growers in the country, newspaper El Nuevo Diario reported.

The investment will come at a cost of around DOP80 million (US$2 million) and will help pineapple growers in the area of Cevicos replant their farms.

His administration plans to visit Costa Rica in January to negotiate the acquisition of the pineapple suckers that will replace grafted varieties.

Growers had previously called on the president to improve the biological variety of the Dominican Republic's cultivated pineapples.

The story reported the growers were overjoyed with the president's surprise visit to the area to make the announcement.
