Aldi announces bold growth strategy for U.S.

German retailer Aldi has announced an aggressive five-year target for its operations in the U.S., with plans to open 650 new stores and build a new regional headquarters and distribution center in Moreno Valley, California. aldi

The proposal implies raising Aldi's average annual store opening rate from 80 to 130 stores, giving it a total of almost 2,000 outlets across the nation by 2018.

The investment in land, facilities and equipment is expected to be worth more than US$3 billion, and the company hopes the expansion will attract 45 million customers per month once complete.

"We're ramping up our expansion plans to meet growing demand for ALDI from customers across the country," said Aldi U.S. division president Jason Hart.

"Recently, we successfully entered new markets such as Houston, and expanded our presence in competitive markets like South Florida and New York City.

"At ALDI, we believe that great quality can be affordable, and we are eager to bring the ALDI difference to new markets like Southern California."

The new stores are anticipated to create more than 10,000 new jobs in Aldi stores, warehouses and division offices.
