U.S.: Florida blueberry growers 'pleased' with fruit set

With Florida's blueberry industry just about to kick off its 2015 campaign, an industry head has said everything is so far shaping up to be a relatively normal season in terms of production.Ā blueberries_820133l65sq

Some minor quantities were already being picked but 'serious' volumes were not expected to begin in the southern growing areas until the end of the month, according to Florida Blueberry Growers Association president Dudley Calfee.

"Most of what I hear from everybody is theyā€™re pleased with their fruit set, and the fruit seems to be progressing as we would expect it to be at this time of year," Calfee told www.freshfruitportal.com.

"I think most of us are looking at what we would consider a normal harvest season starting later this month barring any kind of cold snaps.

"Keeping in mind that a cold snap can set a crop back as much as a week, so weā€™ve all learned not to try to pin-point any specific dates, but just watch our field and let the crop kind of speak for itself."

He said the fruit set had been improved this season thanks to better chill hours than previous years.

"So far I think everyoneā€™s pleased with what theyā€™re seeing in their field - at least thatā€™s what Iā€™m hearing. I donā€™t talk to everybody in the business, but that's what the folks that I have talked to are saying," Calfee said.

While Calfee said he didn't have specific information on what the U.S. market was looking like, he highlighted Florida's advantage as the first state to harvest its blueberry crop.

"Usually by the time we come in Chileā€™s production is dwindling or gone, and that fruitā€™s been on the boat for three weeks, so we come out with fruit that the customer can buy in the grocery store that was in the field maybe a day or two before," he said.

"The qualityā€™s usually good, the size is good, and usually our consumers are delighted to get those fresh blueberries."

The vast majority of Florida's blueberries are sold to the U.S. and Canadian markets, Calfee said.

The season typically runs through mid-May, but Calfee emphasized you could never really tell with blueberries 'exactly what theyā€™re going to do.'

He added the Florida BlueberryĀ Growers Association was currently carrying out a survey in cooperation with producers to establish specific figures for things such as acerage, varietal types, and plant density.
