U.S. mango import volumes up by a fifth

The U.S. National Mango Board (NMB) is encouraging retailers and suppliers to act quickly to move significantly higher weekly mango volumes than 2014. mangos_31749412 small

The group said this year's volume had already seen weekly shipments of more than 4 million boxes - an 18% increase compared to the largest week last year.

Volumes are expected to remain steady through the second quarter of 2015, with Mexican mango imports anticipated to be 3% higher than 2013, which was a record-breaking year for Mexican mango import volume.

The NMB said this was an 'exciting opportunity' for retailers to sell more mangoes and delight their customers.

One suggestion the organization gave retailers to pump up sales and help shift the fruit was to offer mangoes by the case to give shoppers the best deal.

In addition, it said secondary mango displays could be set up in the front of the store or front of the produce department, and highlighted how point of sale (POS) materials could be used to teach shippers about mangoes, including how to cut them, judge ripeness and could provide exciting recipe ideas.

POS materials are free of charge to order from the NMB website.

"This is a great opportunity for retailers to build their mango business and be champions for their mango partners," NMB marketing director Rachel Muñoz said.

"This historic mango season comes just in time for the summer months when customers are most excited about mangos."

The NMB will be issuing additional projections and updates as soon as these become available in its weekly Mango Crop Report.
