Australian university to study GM bananas

An Australian researcher has told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) of plans to grow genetically modified bananas in far north Queensland, which was battered earlier this year by Cyclone Yasi.

Queensland University of Technology professor James Dale said the goal was to develop nutritious fruit that could be easily grown in places like India and the African continent, the media organization reported.

Dale said there was no risk of cross-contamination with existing crops in the region that would reach the supermarket shelves, the story reported.

"The strategy here is instead of trying to get to people with supplements or food fortification is to provide the high levels of micro-nutrients that they currently don't have, in their food," Dale was quoted as saying.
