Mexican avocados dominate US market, while Europe reports lowest volume in weeks
Intelligence marketing agency Avobook says the global avocado market is entering a decisive phase as the year draws to a close. This final stretch is marked by declines in volume, price adjustments, and shifting participation among major avocado suppliers.
Avobook adds that in the US, the drop in weekly shipments during week 47 accounted for most of the supply contraction and narrowed the price gap between sizes. Mexican avocados almost completely dominated the market through the week.
The United States recorded 1,401 avocado shipments, down nearly 13 percent from the previous week but up 20 percent year-over-year. Mexico remains the top supplier, accounting for 96.49 percent of shipments.
European avocado volume decline
European avocado imports totaled 589, a 10 percent decrease from last week and 19 percent lower than the same week last year. Avobook also notes this is the lowest volume in recent weeks.
Most of the avocado imports in Europe came from Chile, Colombia, Israel, and Spain.
Chile is the main supplier, holding 41 percent of the European avocado import market. Colombia provides nearly 24 percent, followed by Israel at 17.49 percent.
The agency also reports that prices for smaller avocados in Europe are starting to match those in the US.
While Chile is still a major global avocado supplier and leads in Europe, Avobook says it is cutting back on exports, “deepening the downward trend that has persisted since Week 41 and resulting in a smaller presence in Europe."
The week before, Avobook reported that Chilean avocado exports decreased by 7 percent from the previous week but remained 6 percent above year-on-year volume.
Europe received two-thirds of these shipments, while Asia and Latin America each received 14 percent.
China avocado growth remains steady
Avobook reports that China maintains its typical year-end pattern of moderate volumes, but imports are significantly higher than the same week last year.
In week 47, China imported 57 avocado shipments, a 63 percent increase from last year. Avobook attributes this growth to higher volumes from Chile and a nearly 10 percent price correction.
