Pipfruit NZ set for name change to avoid confusion

New Zealand's pome fruit industry body Pipfruit NZ is reportedly changing its name to avoid confusion outside the farming community, according to Rural News Group.

The association's name will be changed to New Zealand Apples and Pears Inc., and is set to be officially launched at the Agricultural Fieldays in Mystery Creek later this month.

Pipfruit NZ chief executive Alan Pollard said the old name was causing confusion, as the organization was being linked to oranges and plums because they have pips.

“Pipfruit NZ is only about apples and pears; it worked okay as we used to interface only with growers,” Pollard was quoted as saying.

Nowadays the industry deals with students, potential workers, the Government and international clients, according to the story.

Pollard said the group's the logo had also been modified. The new name and logo will be made public at the Fieldays for the first time.

The representative also said the decision to exhibit at the Fieldays was three-fold; tell visitors that NZ is the number one apple industry is the world, reminding school students of careers in the industry and working with machinery importers and dealers on biosecurity issues.
