U.S. salmonella outbreak linked to dried coconut

U.S. authorities have recommended people not to eat certain dried coconut products amid a multi-state salmonella outbreak that has led to three hospitalizations.

On March 16, International Harvest recalled bags of Organic Go Smile! Raw Coconut and bulk packages of Go Smiles Dried Coconut Raw, while on March 19 Vitamin Cottage Natural Food Markets recalled packages of Natural Grocers Coconut Smiles Organic.

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) urged people to avoid these products.

13 people infected with the outbreak strain of Salmonella Typhimurium have been reported from eight states. No deaths have yet been reported.

California has seen the highest number of infections, with people also affected in Colorado, Connecticut, Idaho, Missouri, Oregon, Texas, and Utah.

The CDC says it is investigating and will provide updates when more information is available.
