Japanese company sells heart-shaped strawberries for Valentine's Day

As Valentine's Day approaches, a Japanese company is cashing in on the holiday of love by selling heart-shaped strawberries at US$11 a pop.

Courage-Create handles production and sales of the fruit, and is reported to be doing brisk trade and selling a limited lot of 100 units a day, according to website Asahi.com.

The strawberries go by the brand name of "Ichigokoro," combining the Japanese words "ichigo" (strawberry) with "kokoro" (heart), and each fruit weighs between 22 and 26 grams

Courage-Create president Akira Fujihiro was quoted as saying: "Love can be communicated by just looking at the shape. I hope those who buy them can make a loved one smile."

The product was in development for four years and first went on sale in December 2015.
