Mexico: Michoacán Governor makes accusations against APEAM president

The Governor of Mexican state Michoacán, Silvano Aureoles Conejo, has launched an attack on Avocado Producers and Exporting Packers Association of Mexico (APEAM) president Adrián Iturbide, accusing the industry leader of allegedly having an illegal avocado orchard.

El Sol de Morelia reported Aureoles Conejo publicly alleged Iturbide as having an orchard on Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) property in the area of Villa Madero.

Aureoles Conejo also criticized Iturbide for suing the state government for the dismantling of "irregular orchards", the story reported.

The story reported Aureoles Conejo claimed there would be "zero tolerance for the impunity and abuse of power from those who use this flag, have destroyed a good part of our territory because of the voracious anxiety to have money and profits in the short term".

"They haven't had modesty or scruples in destroying our nature," he was quoted as saying.

The Governor emphasized he was not against avocado production, but illegality and disorder, and claimed Iturbide "as president of a group which has international recognition, he should be the first person responsible in caring for how productive tasks are developed", the story reported.

Fresh Fruit Portal approached APEAM representatives for comment and received the following response from the organization:

"We inform you that this issue is something between particular people, where our association does not interfere and we remind you that APEAM is not the organization responsible for regulating the use of soil, monitoring or supervising the application of environmental protection laws, or any other law or norm of the agricultural industry," the statement said.
