U.S.: Lidl to open first stores in Long Island

Germany-based supermarket chain Lidl will open its first two Long Island stores next week, says local Long Island Business News.

Its new store will open in Center Moriches in the space formerly used by competitor Waldbaum's supermarket. Another rebranded Best Market store in West Babylon will open on the same day, Dec 11.

Lidl says it will hold ribbon-cutting ceremonies at both locations and kick off a weekend of special sales, prizes and giveaways.

“Our store brings significant new investment to Center Moriches and will be a customer-focused shopping destination that will be a great addition to the community," Center Moriches's store manager Carlo Franzese told Long Island Business News.

Following the opening of these two stores, Lidl will open a store in Plainview, Long Island. It will also open several more, which are currently in the works.

Lidl's U.S. headquarters in Arlington Country, Virginia opened in June of 2015. The company operates more than 11,000 stores in 32 countries.
