Better and greener lettuce—Greenway Farms partners up with Sollum Technologies

Maryland-based Greenway Farms will now grow its sustainable, no-GMO leafy greens with the help of Sollum Technologies.

The partnership, announced through a press release, involves the use of Sollum’s 100% dynamic SF-ONE LED lighting fixtures on Greenway Farms’ greenhouses to enhance produce quality and continue the company’s mission to deliver fresh produce and fish across the DC-Maryland-Virginia region.

“We chose Sollum for its unmatched flexibility,” said Elshan Bal, partner at Greenway Farms. “Being able to fine-tune our light spectrum and intensity at the zone level gives us a new level of control over crop quality, uniformity, and scheduling. This adaptability is a real game-changer for our production.”

Flexibility with lighting is essential for crops like lettuce, says Matthew Bonavita, Sollum Technologies' VP of Sales for the US market. Dynamic lighting allows growers to granularly control light intensity and spectrum based on crop stage, time of day, or even weather conditions outside. For Greenway’s lettuces, this means tighter control over compactness, coloration, and consistency year-round.

Sollum’s technology uses the firm’s cloud-based SUN as a Service platform, granting growers the ability to control and adapt to weather changes and other factors in real-time. It comes with pre-set and customizable light recipes developed from research and real-world performance.

“This precision leads to more uniform growth, improved crop quality, and reduced waste—all while optimizing energy use and automating day-to-day lighting management,” explains Bonavita.
