Fresh Del Monte’s Uruguayan sweet oranges make Europe debut
Produce giant Fresh Del Monte began distributing its first shipments of oranges from Uruguay to major European markets this week. The company grows and packs the fruit in the Salto region, which, according to the multinational, has optimal climatic conditions for quality citrus production.
The move marks a strategic expansion of Fresh Del Monte’s sourcing capabilities, as part of its goal to offer a diverse range of fresh fruit year-round. The addition of Uruguay to its portfolio, the company says, supports continuous supply amid climate variability and shifting weather patterns.
“As producers, we seek to achieve long-term sustainable production that is environmentally friendly,” said one producer from Uruguay. Another added: “Nothing that is not of high quality is packed in a box.”

Uruguayan producers grow their oranges under what Fresh Del Monte calls strict agronomic protocols. They also harvest the product at peak ripeness and pack it to preserve freshness and flavor. The fruit reportedly has a Brix level above 11.5° and an average juice content of approximately 40%.
Del Monte’s Uruguayan oranges are available in Navel, Salustiana, and Valencia varieties, and in sizes ranging from 48 to 100. The fruit is suitable for both fresh consumption and juicing.
The Uruguayan citrus season runs through the end of August, with European availability lasting until September.
