2025 US avocado market: A strong quarter and a year of growth
The US avocado category has followed an impressive upward trajectory, according to the Hass Avocado Board’s Regional Composite Reports. The so-called “green gold” has outpaced the overall retail produce market with significant growth in both dollar and volume sales.
The board’s Total US report, which presents an overview of California, the Great Lakes, Midsouth, Northeast, Plains, Southeast, South Central, and West regions, reveals notable trends that highlight the American shoppers' increasing demand for avocados.
Dollar and volume sales growth

The avocado category saw an impressive 12 percent growth in dollars year-over-year, outpacing the overall produce category, which grew by just two percent
Volume growth was also strong at four percent, demonstrating that the avocado category is not only commanding higher prices but also seeing more units moved in stores.
The peak of avocado sales for 2025 came during Q2, when a total of 695 million units were sold at the average price of $1.22 per unit.
The lowest quarter occurred in 2023-Q4, with just 543 million units sold at a lower ASP of $1.07 per unit.
Average selling price (ASP)

In 2025, the average selling price of avocados across the US stood at $1.22 per unit, which is an eight percent increase from the previous year.
The ASP peaked last year, during Q3, when it soared to $1.28 per unit, highlighting the strength of notable holidays such as the Fourth of July and Labor Day.
Strong performances across PLUs (Price Look-Up Codes)
The small avocado variety, known by its PLU code 4046, saw the largest dollar growth, rising by 28 percent compared to the previous year. This category also experienced the highest unit growth, increasing by 16 percent in 2025 versus 2024.
The bagged avocado segment, which has grown in popularity due to its convenience and often lower price point, also saw solid growth in both dollar and volume sales.
Organic avocados continued their steady growth, supported by the rising demand for organic produce, while other smaller categories of avocados contributed to overall volume growth.
Dollar velocity (sales per store) grew by 12 percent year-over-year across the US, while unit velocity (number of units sold per store) saw a more moderate increase of four percent
On average, stores sold $1,389 in avocado dollars and 1,142 units of avocados per week, indicating strong category performance and a steady flow of product moving off the shelves.
Regional trends
While overall numbers are strong, specific regions exhibit unique growth patterns driven by local demand, supply dynamics, and consumer preferences.
California, being the largest producer of avocados in the US, continues to dominate in avocado sales, contributing significantly to the national growth figures.
The Great Lakes and Southeast regions, which have shown increasing interest in healthy eating, have seen particularly strong performances in both dollar and unit sales.
