Avocado shipments surge in the US and Europe, decline in China

Global avocado trade saw mixed trends in week 38, Avobook reports, with the United States and Europe recording notable increases in volume, while shipments to China continued to lag behind 2024 levels.

The US imported 1,589 avocado shipments, a 3 percent increase from the previous week and 23 percent more than the same period last year. Mexico maintained its lead as the top supplier, accounting for 79 percent of total shipments. California boosted its exports by 18 percent, while shipments from Peru fell by 16 percent.

US, Europe drive year-on-year growth

European markets received 1,025 containers, up 15 percent from the prior week and 46 percent above year-ago levels. Peru supplied 72 percent of the total volume, followed by Colombia with 11 percent, Kenya and Tanzania with a combined 11 percent, South Africa with 4 percent, and Chile with 2 percent, contributing 25 containers.

In China, avocado imports rose 4 percent compared to the previous week, reaching 27 containers. However, that figure remains 39 percent below the same week in 2024. Peru accounted for 96 percent of the volume, and Chile entered the market with its first shipment. Average prices reached approximately $1.65 per pound for sizes 18 to 24, with a slower price increase than in previous weeks.

Peruvian exports in week 37 totaled 659 shipments, down 18 percent from the previous week but more than double the volume shipped during the same week last year. Europe received 88 percent of Peru’s exports, while the U.S. took 6 percent and Chile 5 percent.
