Cause of Leelanau Fruit Company plant fire is being investigated

Shortly before 2 pm on Saturday, a Leelanau Fruit Company employee reported an appliance fire in the cherry producer's main processing facility in Suttons Bay, Michigan.

The flames were controlled approximately 10 minutes after 50 firefighters from several departments in the area arrived at the scene, reported local news outlet 9 & 10 News. The fire spread to the roof of the processing plant, but the total damage, as well as the cause of the incident, is the subject of current official assessments and investigations.

Local authorities stated that no one was in the building at the time of the incident, resulting in no reported victims or injuries. This was later confirmed by Glenn LaCross, President of Leelanau Fruit Company.

No significant damage

In a statement released on Tuesday to local outlet The Ticker, LaCross said, "damage to the facility appears to be limited, though the full extent will not be known until inspections and assessments are completed."

The Leelanau Fruit executive thanked the swift actions of the on-site employee who called 911, as well as the "outstanding work" of the fire departments that responded to the incident and controlled the fire.

"At this time, operations at the plant remain under review as we assess next steps. We will provide updates as more information becomes available," he added.
