Avocado tides shift: Mexico dominates US market, Chile overtakes Peru in Europe

Global avocado trade displayed significant regional divergence in week 42, Avobook notes in its latest report

While Mexico reinforced its leadership in the US market, Chile emerged as Europe’s top supplier, with shipments to China showing modest growth with balanced sourcing.

Avocado arrivals to the United States fell by eight percent compared to last week. Despite the decline, Mexico strengthened its position as the primary supplier, accounting for 90 percent of shipments to said destination.

Europe sees seasonal adjustments

European avocado imports remained steady at 1,007 containers. However, Chile overtook Peru as the leading supplier as the latter enters the final stretch of the season. Chile captured 47 percent of the European market, while its neighboring country’s share dropped to 25 percent.

As Peruvian supplies wind down, shipments from the Andean country fell by 84 percent week-over-week. The Chilean avocado trade increased by 27 percent over the previous week, exceeding 500 containers.

Asian market enjoys balanced sourcing

Avocado containers into China rose by five percent week-on-week. Supply to the Asian giant was almost evenly split between Peru and Chile, though the sharp fall in Peruvian exports indicates that Chile may soon assume a larger role.
