APEAM refutes Nayarit government: Avocados from the state will not be debuting in the US

The Mexican Avocado Producers and Packers Association (APEAM) has issued an official statement regarding the alleged admission of avocado exports from Nayarit, Mexico, into the United States.

“To date, there is no official document or agreement signed by the US Department of Agriculture (USDA-APHIS) authorizing the inclusion of the state of Nayarit in the avocado export program. Consequently, the only states authorized to export avocados to the United States continue to be Michoacán and Jalisco,” APEAM says in a statement.

No Nayarit avocados will be exported to the US at this time

FreshFruitPortal.com previously reported that the western-central state had gained access to the US market. In a statement from the Nayarit government, officials had celebrated the supposed admission, calling it a milestone that would “open up new opportunities for farming families and position itself on the international agri-food map.”

The Nayarit government stated that authorities had confirmed that the state “fully complies with the strict phytosanitary standards established in the Operational Work Plan, Systems Approach for the Importation of Fresh Hass Avocados from Mexico to the United States”.

APEAM stressed that all official communications regarding the opening of new states or municipalities for export “shall be made solely through the General Directorate of Plant Health (DGSV) as previously agreed with USDA-APHIS, through established institutional channels, and shall be included in the Operational Work Plan.”

To date, APEAM has not received any official instructions from SENASICA confirming the US market access for Nayarit avocados.
