Pear-fect comeback: Northwest crop up 78 percent as harvest wraps

After a sharply reduced 2024 crop, Pacific Northwest growers delivered a standout rebound this season, with USA Pears putting 2025’s harvest at 19 million boxes. The 78 percent year-over-year, positions retailers for a strong holiday supply and promotional momentum, the organization said.

Oregon and Washington producers, who account for about 88 percent of US fresh pear volume, wrapped the season with broad varietal gains and heightened marketing plans heading into December.

“Thanks to the dedication and hard work of our 700 grower families, partners, and the entire USA Pears community, we are proud to deliver exceptional quality fresh pears to consumers seeking a healthy snack or culinary delight,” says USA Pears President and CEO CarrieAnn Arias.“Elevating holiday dishes is easy with the gorgeous pears produced this year. We’re shining a light on all the possibilities with pears.”

Bearing acreage also saw an increase, with an estimated 41,000 acres, up two percent from last year, according to a May summary by the United States Department of Agriculture’s National Agricultural Statistics Service.

Bosc leads the comeback

USA Pears, which distributes ten pear varieties year-round, reports higher yields across all categories. However, Bosc pears lead the resurgence, with production up more than 250 percent over last year.

Known for their elongated necks and cinnamon-brown skin, Bosc pears hold their shape and texture after cooking, making them a perfect addition to any holiday table, the organization says.

Nutrition messaging

The organization is emphasizing fiber-focused nutrition outreach as younger consumers show increased interest in more health-focused food and snacking choices. A medium pear contains about six grams of dietary fiber, roughly 21 percent of the recommended daily value

This trend aligns with a recent International Food Information Council (IFIC) Food & Health survey, which explores ten key criteria Americans use to define what a healthy snack is.

While the “good source of protein” factor took the top spot, 28 percent of respondents were interested in the fruit’s fiber content.

“With our recent brand refresh, USA Pears has put education front and center, and we’re creating engaging content that makes pears irresistible, fun, and easy to incorporate in everyday eating,” explains Arias. “On our website or through streaming platforms and social feeds, we’re giving shoppers greater transparency into what makes US-grown pears a staple for everyone’s kitchen.”

The organization plans to showcase this year’s bountiful crop at the New York Produce Show during World Pear Day on December 6, engaging local and national media to spotlight US-grown pears.
