Mexico’s avocado industry delivered an unprecedented surge of fruit to the United States ahead of Super Bowl LX, reinforcing both the scale and strategic importance of the event for the category. Authorities in Michoacán reported that roughly 130,000 metric tons of avocados were exported for Big Game-related consumption, representing an increase of nearly 20 percent compared with the same period last year.
Over the four weeks leading up to the game, US imports of Mexican avocados surpassed 300 million pounds, setting a new record for pre–Super Bowl movement. The shipment window, concentrated in December and January, reflects the highly coordinated supply planning that now surrounds what has become the single largest annual consumption moment for avocados in the United States.

Mexico continues to dominate US supply, accounting for close to 90 percent of total avocado imports. Favorable growing conditions this season, including adequate rainfall, supported strong harvest volumes and consistent size profiles, enabling exporters to meet elevated promotional demand from retailers and foodservice operators. Industry representatives noted that strict U.S. phytosanitary standards were fully met, ensuring smooth cross-border movement during the critical shipping window.
Beyond the Super Bowl
Sheer volume aside, the commercial value of Mexican avocado exports has been rising steadily. Export revenues expanded by more than 20 percent between 2023 and 2024, indicating that demand growth has been accompanied by firm pricing. This resilience is notable given broader grocery inflation pressures in the US, suggesting that avocados remain a priority item in consumer baskets, particularly for social and gathering occasions.
The record volumes shipped this season underscore Mexico’s capacity to scale production rapidly during demand spikes. At the same time, they highlight the degree to which the US avocado market relies on a single origin. As volumes continue to expand and promotional calendars lengthen into spring events and Cinco de Mayo, supply chain coordination and trade stability will remain central to sustaining growth.

For now, the latest shipment figures signal continued momentum for the category, with Mexico once again demonstrating its ability to anchor the US avocado market during its most important consumption event of the year.
